Carreño, Teresa (1853-1917)

La pianista más grande de su época

En Caracas, el 22 de diciembre de 1853, nació la primera artista venezolana de fama internacional, quien se convirtió en una de las pianistas más famosas del siglo XIX y comienzo del XX, además de ser una notable compositora, excelente mezzosoprano y estricta profesora de piano. Hija de Manuel Antonio Carreño y de Clorinda García de Sena y Toro. Sus primeros maestros fueron su padre y el pianista alemán Julio Hohené.


El 25 de noviembre de 1862 debutó en el lrving Hall de Nueva York. En esta ciudad recibió lecciones del famoso pianista norteamericano  Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Luego se le escuchó en Cuba, la Casa Blanca y París.

En la capital francesa tocó ante Pedro Roberto José Quidant, Gioacchino Rossini y Franz Liszt. Este último se ofreció para darle clases si se trasladaba a Roma, lo que no realizó por razones económicas.


Desde París, inició su carrera de concertista que la llevó a visitar países de Europa, así como Estados Unidos, Australia, Nueva Zelanda y África del Sur, acompañada de las más famosas orquestas dirigidas por eminentes maestros. Su repertorio incluía conciertos de autores clásicos y románticos. En 1873, se casó con el violinista Émile Sauret y en 1876 con el cantante de ópera Giovanni Tagliapetra, con quien fundó una empresa de conciertos, la Carreño-Donaldi Operatic Gem Company.

A mediados de 1885 volvió a Venezuela durante el primer gobierno del presidente Joaquín Crespo. Al año siguiente, ya en le “Bienio”, Guzmán Blanco le encarga organizar la siguiente temporada de ópera en Caracas.

Al parecer el elenco que logró contratar no llenó las expectativas del público caraqueño y la sociedad de entonces, además, había adoptado una actitud de rechazo hacia una mujer que, por más talento que tuviera, era divorciada y vuelta a casar, algo considerado para la época como un escándalo; fueron boicoteadas las óperas presentadas y la temporada debió ser suspendida.

Luego de pasar por Nueva York, se regreso a Europa y comenzó a desempeñarse como solista de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Berlín. En esta ciudad fijó su residencia. En esta época conoce al pianista Eugene D'Albert, con quien se casó en 1892 y tuvo dos hijas: Eugenia y Hertha. En 1902, se casó por cuarta y última vez con su cuñado Arturo Tagliapetra.

La Primera Guerra Mundial imposibilitó que continuara con su actividad concertistica desde Alemania, por lo que luego de realizar una gira por España se residenció en Estados Unidos. En Nueva York fallecería el 12 de junio de 1917, a los pocos días de regresar de una gira por Cuba que no culminó. En sus últimos años era evidente el agotamiento general debido a largos períodos de excesivo trabajo.

Entre sus obras más famosas como compositora se cuentan: Himno a Bolívar,  Kleiner Walzer (conocido como "Mi Teresita, dedicado a su hija Teresita) y Cuarteto para cuerdas en si bemol. En relación a Venezuela se destacan: Saludo a Caracas, Danza venezolana e Himno al Ilustre Americano.


Los venezolanos le rinden un justo homenaje dándole su nombre al teatro más importante del país, el teatro Teresa Carreño, inaugurado en 1983.
